Like many fitness enthusiasts, I used to carry a bulky gym bag to my workouts, but it was just so cumbersome and inconvenient that I eventually started leaving it at home, and simply carrying my essentials with me. There are no pockets in workout attire, so I ended up toting my towel, water bottle, keys, cell phone, and membership card in my hands. Sometimes I could swear that I got more of a workout juggling my things and picking up dropped items in the parking lot than I got in the gym!

I looked around in all the local stores for something just small enough to hold my stuff, but I couldn't find anything that was right for me. The biggest problem was the water bottle - heavy, unyielding, somewhat fragile, and incompressible, it became the main thing I had to deal with. There seemed to be no other solution than to design and make my own water bottle holder.

A day or two later a simple sketch, a few measurements, a trip to the craft store, and an hour on the sewing machine produced my first prototype water bottle holder. This was a soft sided container exactly the right size to fit a water bottle, and with an adjustable neck strap so it could hang comfortably at my side, leaving my hands free.

The first time I took it to the gym several of my friends asked me where I got it, and when I told them I made it myself they asked if I could make one for them too. It wasn't long before the word got out and I had a little sideline making a few "Fitness Caddies" every week.

Within a short time, I realized that I was on to something big. I had already added an outside pocket for cell phone, a secure inner pocket for money, and a metal clip for keys, and then I knew it was time to turn my sideline into a business.
